Brihadeeswarar Temple
Thanjavur, the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, is a city steeped in over a thousand years of history, art, and architecture. At its heart stands the magnificent Brihadeeswarar Temple (also known as the Big Temple or Peruvudaiyar Kovil), a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century. The temple's towering 66-metre vimana (temple tower), the massive Nandi monolith carved from a single stone, and the exquisite Chola frescoes stand as a testament to the architectural and engineering brilliance of the Chola dynasty — a marvel that continues to awe visitors even today.
